چکیده

By measuring the anti-Stokes ~AS! and Stokes ~S! Raman spectra on the same isolated single-wall carbon nanotube ~SWNT!, we here determine the electronic transition energies Eii experimentally (Eii ), and then we compare these Eii exp with the Eii values obtained with theoretical predictions (Eii ). In such an approach, the nanotube (n ,m) structure identification depends on the theory parameters, but the experimental determination of Eii exp does not, and depends only on the experimental AS/S intensity ratio and the laser energy E laser used in the experiment. We measured the radial breathing mode frequency vRBM and Eii exp for specific tubes, and we then performed the (n ,m) identification by using the dt diameter dependence of the electronic transitions. We present such an analysis for a wide nanotube diameter range, focusing primarily on small diameter SWNTs (dt,1.1 nm), where there are very few (n ,m) possibilities for SWNTs that can be in resonance with the appropriate laser energy E laser . This allows an experimental determination of Eii exp values to be made for a variety of (n ,m) SWNTs. Our experimental results indicate that: ~i! the large curvature in small diameter tubes induces a s-p hybridization, thus lowering the electronic band energies, and ~ii! the simple formulation of the tight binding model (g052.89 eV) to determine Eii starts to deviate from Eii exp for tubes with dt,1.1 nm, but the deviation DE225E22 2E22 cal remains smaller than 20 meV for dt>0.83 nm. A comparison between Eii exp

Resonance Raman Spectroscopy of Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

The unusual one-dimensional properties of phonons in crystalline arrays of carbon nanotubes is presented. The main technique for probing the phonon spectra is Raman spectroscopy and the many unique and unusual features of the Raman spectra of carbon nanotubes are highlighted. Various features of the first-order Raman spectra are emphasized, with regard to their 1D behavior and special character...

Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering on single-walled carbon nanotube thin films excited through surface plasmons

We report experimental data that indicate an anti-Stokes Raman emission, reminiscent of coherent antiStokes raman scattering. It originates from a wave mixing process between the incident laser light l and Stokes Raman light s generated by a surface enhanced Raman scattering SERS mechanism. The variation of anti-Stokes SERS spectra of single-walled carbon nanotubes, copper phthalocyanine, and p...

Abnormal Anti-stokes Raman Spectra of Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes Raised from Coherent Anti-stokes Raman Scattering and Optical Cooling Processes

For the single-walled carbon nanotubes, the higher values of anti-Stokes/Stokes Raman intensity ratio (Ias/Is) then the predictions of the Maxwell-Bolzmann formula indicates a CARS emission resulting from a wave mixing process between the incident laser light (ωl) and Stokes Raman light (ωs) generated by a SERS mechanism . The weaker value of (Ias/Is) observed at resonant excitation of semicond...

Raman scattering in carbon nanotubes revisited

We explain the origin of the high-energy mode in the first-order Raman spectra of single-walled carbon nanotubes by double-resonant scattering. Following this interpretation, we calculate the multiple-peak structure as found in Raman experiments. The highest peak is above the graphite G-point frequency; its amplitude is larger than that of the second peak. We derive positive and negative freque...
